Turntable Tuesday #3

This is a portrait of JFK I have been working on for my friend Topher...for a bit too long.
A few months ago he was looking at a creepy portrait of Lincoln (everyone's favorite president) I did a while back that's hanging in my living room, and asked me if I could do a creepy JFK. I liked the idea, and suggested that I make it just a little off instead. I decided to give him a slightly lazy eye and sunken features, so as not to be blatantly obvious. My thought process was that the creepiness would lay in the subtlety. But now, here I am, roughly 95% finished, unable to seal the deal.
I don't feel ready to call this finished, but knowing myself, I could end up working on it forever.

Turntable Tuesday!

Everybody and their cousin, and their cousin's friend's dog has a 'Music Monday' post, so I figured I'd mix it up a little.

First and foremost, I am a music nerd. I collect vinyl and love it. I understand why some people don't see the merit in obsessing over a nearly obsolete technology, but those of us who have taken the time to appreciate the notable difference in sound quality versus the average mp3, have stepped into a brotherhood that we cannot be beaten out of. There is also the nostalgia factor. I grew up in the era of the record store. I would save my pennies up, and visit Record Breakers, in Hoffman Estates, Illinois (Now located in Chicago and affiliated with the venue Reggie's) about once a week. Those experiences have left me with the need for something tangible, which in the era of itunes and the like, is becoming more of a rarity.

So, for my first post I'm going to show off one of my favorite records in my collection, a gift from Susannahbean.

The reception for Mine and Don Fogler's show 'Sideshow' went down on the 24th. Not a whole lot of visitors, but hey, that's what I expected. There were a few people interested in my work and I might make a sale or two, but mostly, I was just happy to get my name out there. Also, I'm already going to be in another show on october 11th, in Bloomington, Illinois at Come Together Studios. It should be fun. Lots of art, bands, and drinking.

Also! My ETSY store seems to be picking up. I made two sales this week! Hopefully I can find the time to keep it well stocked. Check it out here.

Soooo... hanging everything went well and I was able to put in 19 pieces. We are calling the show 'Sideshow' and it will be up until September 14th. 17 of my pieces are for sale! For reasonable prices!

So the art show is actually going to be on the 12th (or thats when we will be hanging everything anyway) at 'The Coffeehouse' in downtown Normal. I'll be on display with two other artists and I think our work will be up for a couple of weeks. Most of my work will be for sale.

Hey, moving again was fun. Almost as fun as being kicked in the teeth, but it's over now and sus and I are settled into our new apartment. I am now a resident of Normal IL.

I've been trying to keep busy, here's what I've been up to.

I've been working on a series of gouache paintings like this. This is the first time I've ever really used gouache. I'm trying to familiarize myself with the medium. Sorry about the glare but, you get the idea.

Here's another one. I'm kind of trying to see how many variations of this idea I can do before it gets stale.

One more. P.S. crappy frames are fun!!

Here's my latest painting. I don't know what I was really trying to say with this image. I was thinking of an old poster from an elementary school cafeteria. Based on my own memory, it wasn't the clean happy place that the child oriented food pyramid posters portrayed. I wanted to try painting it in entirety and then sanding it down to get the aged look. For a first attempt, I think it went ok.

So my show went pretty well (thanks sus) and I think everyone had a really good time. Here are some of the stats for the evening:

Notice my shirt in this photo. I attempted to raise funds by way of wrestlemania. I only made 1 dollar (thanks shane).

This was the first thing you'd see walking in the door.

Next to that was the bottles of endangered animal blood series. Sidenote; One of the pieces in this series is entitled 'Bald Eagle Blood'. This last Tuesday I found out that the American bald eagle was recently removed from the list of endangered species. I will have to take steps to change this...and I'm not talking about the title of the piece.

Severed Arms. Some lady told me this was by far the best in my show. To me that was strange, I probably worked the least on this one. Though I do like it.

This was the last painting I did before the show. The title is partially taken from a song by the band Botch. PS; This painting also lights up with flashy LED's!!

This is the 'Single use T-shirt'. It was the prize for the treasure hunt.

Some guy actually followed the treasure map I made and found the prize. The map was hanging on the wall in the room with the food and drinks.

At the end of the night I had my friend Ty's band Dramatic Habits Played in the storefront window.

The show ended up going till about midnight, when I had to kick everyone out. So that's a pretty good sign that people were having a good time. Thank you to everyone who helped me out and came to the show!!!

This is a painting I did a while ago for a synesthaesia project to the song 'Greet Death' by Explosions in the sky. It was supposed to be somewhat in the vein of Arthur Doves 'Rhapsody in Blue'.

This is another one I have been working on for my show. I think it's coming along pretty well, plus it's pretty big (3'x4') which is fun. Notice: painting 2 critique going on in background

Arms is pretty much done. I may decide to do more. who knows?

Soooooo, the show at the end of last semester went pretty well, and for this semester I was assigned to plan a solo show! This will be my first. So now I'm working (frantically) towards having at least six finished paintings ready by the end of the current semester. Here's some of the beginnings...

Here is a painting I did over the summer just for fun. It's acrylic, liquid acrylic and some collagery. I still don't know if I like working with liquid acrylic, it was the first time I ever tried it out. It was like crazy water color that dried fast and ended up mega saturated the next day. It's definitely good for splattery stuff. I'm going to give this one to someone special.

So I'm back from my summer excursion with Susannah and we are getting ready for the new school year. We drove from Chicago to Malibu and back. It was amazing. So we were gone pretty much all summer and I realized I hadn't even posted most of the stuff from last year soooooo....here it is.

This was my final painting for the class and my first time really painting for myself. It paid off, I got an A. My girlfriend, Susannah (she has the blog "I KNIT TOO") had the idea to make another painting with the firing gun. I'll probably do that when I have time

This is a painting of a still life I set up with play-doh. I actually got an A on this one too. Either I'm starting to find my niche or I've finally found a professor that gives sympathy grades.

This is a nickel silver dinosaur with an anodized aluminum meteor back-peice. It was riveted together with 16 ga. copper wire. It was originally intended to be a broach but I learned the hard way that you can't solder aluminum.

This is a letter opener. It looks like a light bulb. Blah blah new gold,nickel silver, and anodized aluminum blah blah 16 ga. copper rivets.

Here is a broach of a skull with a beard. Yeah, I know. Wow, another skull. Great. You're so metal. P.S. No, it is not on fire.
